What moves Gold

Real yields

Gold pays no coupon, so it competes with the real (inflation-adjusted) yield on government bonds. When real yields rise, holding gold costs more in forgone interest, and that usually weighs on it.

The dollar

Gold is quoted in dollars. A stronger dollar makes it more expensive in every other currency, which tends to soften demand — so XAUUSD and the dollar index often move against each other, though not reliably enough to trade mechanically.

Risk and central banks

Gold catches flows when investors want something that is nobody's liability. Central-bank buying has been a large, slow, price-insensitive source of demand — it does not show up on a chart, but it sits underneath one.

Timeframes

Gold trends cleanly on the 4h and daily, and chops badly on the very low timeframes around the London and New York opens. The 1h is usually the lowest frame where structure stays readable.
